How is it made?
An image is taken with 3-D photography. This makes the photo clear and accurate, and you will see every knot, raised grain, swirl, and veining. Colors are vibrant and pop.
The vinyl is then cut into strips and mounted on boards to resemble a plank. It is often associated as a realistic mimic of hardwood, but some use it as a stone look. Many prefer it because the larger format/fewer seams give it a more continuous look, like a quarry slab. You can choose features like embossing to give it textured looks, and it comes in matte or gloss finishes. While vinyl can also be cut into tile-sized pieces, some will also use the plank to resemble tile floors.
Large formats are currently trending, and tiles seem to be getting bigger and bigger, sometimes as much as 48 X 48. It is all groutable, so some will include that for more realism.

Checking all the boxes
- Durability. While all vinyl is strong, this is especially so being a layered product. The top sheet is a clear plastic protective coating that guards against scratches and scuffs. Spills sit at the top and wipe off easily
- Waterproof. Each plank is completely impervious to water
- Easy to maintain. Sweep and mop (with a manufacturer-approved cleaner)
- Simple to install. DIY-friendly, this “floats” over most existing subfloors and the pieces click together.
